to urge America and Britain to hegotiate peace with

China, dated 29.8.39.

36 informs MA that a compromise between

Britain and Japan is becoming evident and asks MA to find

out Britain's true attitude towards China, dated 31.8.39.

37 is from MA. He says Britain will never

bring pressure to bear on China to stop fighting (dated

2.9.39). As he thought the centre of gravity was being

shifted to America and Russia, he visited the American and

Russian Embassies on the 1.9.39 and learned that America

would not befriend Japan, while the Russians would concen-

trate on dealing with Japan during the European war.

Mentions that kerr would visit Chungking at the end of the

month. David Kung minutes that this message be transmitted

(to Chungking :).

38 asks MA to make enquiries and find out if it

is true that Japan is demanding Britain to withdraw her

troops from China.

39) MA says that Kato interviewed Kerr on 12,9.39

and told him that the new Central Government would be est-

ablished soon and they would cause no adversity to Britain

in future.

40 MA says that Kerr will delay his trip to

Chungking, that Britain will fight a sustained war with

Germany, and that the best policy for China now would be

to strengthen relations with America and Russia, to

prevent future evils.

is probably the last message from 300 (MA)

It is dated 17.9.39 and states that Kerr will proceed to

Chungking at the end of September.
